The IKTf study highlights successful strategies used by Berlin cultural institutions to engage young people: local partnerships, neighborhood-specific outreach initiatives, and formats that enable genuine participation. A practical guide for cultural professionals.

We are pleased to present a new publication from the Institute for Research on Cultural Participation (IKTf): " Key Success Factors for Cultural Institutions in Reaching Young People " by Adrian Scholz Alvarado and Britta Nörenberg.

The report presents findings from the 2024 pilot year of Jugendkulturinitiative Berlin Jugendkulturinitiative JKI), a funding program that supports cultural institutions in developing participatory projects with adolescents and young adults—particularly in socially disadvantaged neighborhoods of Berlin.

Based on interviews and reports from the funded organizations, the study examines practical experiences, challenges, and successful strategies in cultural education. It shows that engaging young people in a sustainable way is achieved primarily through long-term partnerships within the local community, ongoing relationship-building, and formats that enable genuine participation.

This publication offers valuable insights forcultural practitioners, educators, and decision-makers who wish to promote young people’s cultural participation and build long-term connections with their communities.
